Governance Information

Gayton Primary School is part of the multi-academy trust, Cheshire Academies Trust (CAT). Our governing body at Gayton works from the Scheme of Delegation set by the Trust Board of CAT and is known as the Local Governing Body. Governance of Gayton Primary School is split between those matters decided at CAT level and those matters delegated to the Local Governing Body.

Our governors include parents, staff and members of the community. Governors serve a 4-year term of office and a maximum of two terms. Trustees can, in exceptional circumstances, authorise up to a maximum of a further single third term of office. The Local Governing Body is constituted in accordance with the requirements set out by CAT which includes:

  • Headteacher,

  • Up to 2 staff governors,

  • At least 2, and up to 4 parent governors,

  • Up to 8 co-opted governors.

The focus of the governing body is as follows:

  • To ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

  • To hold the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff;

  • To oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent.

  • To ensure and enable parental engagement, and to engage with other key stakeholders in the community.

Becoming a Governor

School governors are people who want to make a positive contribution to children’s education. It is an immensely rewarding role that allows you to be involved in raising standards within school.

In addition to being over 18 years of age, governors need a strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children, the inquisitiveness to question and analyse, and the willingness to learn. They need good inter-personal skills, appropriate levels of literacy in English, and sufficient numeracy skills to understand basic data.

Parent governors are elected by parents of children attending school at the date of election. Co-opted governors are appointed by the local committee and staff governors are elected by staff members of the school.
